Pies & Coffee

Attracted very much by the sound of pie, my dearest beloved, I dropped by one fine day to check out Pies & Coffee, a relatively new cafe at the new Rochester Mall.

A simple, clean design with a laidback feel sums up their cafe look.

Take a look at the pies and cakes available~!

Sorry I didn't take pictures of the meat and seafood pies, I'm a vegetarian so I won't be advertising them although of course the meat pies there are the popular ones~!

Ratatouille Pie ($8.95)

Oh this is one scrumptious pie! Pie crust is perfectly buttery, crumbly and flaky and almost melts in your mouth, haven't eaten such a good savoury pie crust for a long time~ (^v^) The warm filling is tangy savoury creamy tomato, bell peppers, zucchini and mushrooms that pairs with the buttery pie crust to produce a very satisfying flavour and texture! I don't mind eating this again!!! (;

Salad by the side was forgettable, I think it was balsamic vinaigrette dressing. Oh and sadly the mashed potato was inedible for vegetarians cos the brown gravy had chicken stock in it...

By the way this is new and not found on their website menu! I applaud them for adding an option for vegetarians~! :D Other than this, the other vegetarian option would be the Savoury Ricotta Cheese Pie! Sounds so delightfully cheesy, I should try it one day~ :P

Sad to say, I doubt there are options for lacto-vegetarians as I think the crust uses eggs though in minimal amount. None for vegan. ):

Chocolate Almond Pie ($8.95)

I was so excited to hear such a combination of my favourites, but sad to say it was quite disappointing, looks better than it tastes... Just ordinary sweet and fudgy milk chocolate ganache on a chocolate biscuit pie crust that was very unexciting compared to the savoury pies' wonderful crusts. Almond was nowhere infused in the pie itself but only present on top, chopped and not crunchy. Don't get me wrong, it's not horrible, but it's just an extremely ordinary milk chocolate taste, that doesn't justify its price tag and delightful name...

Frankly, I find their pies and desserts too expensive. Savoury pie was great but I would think twice to spend such a hefty amount for a small pie ($9!!), even though it is filling enough despite the size. Desserts? I think I can pay a slightly lesser price for bigger sized ones that are yummier at other places like Da Paolo.

If you don't mind the price, you can give their savoury pies a try though, cos the one sole vegetarian one that I've tried has made me fall in love with it. (;
